Here, seven members of our cello group and our orchestra academy come together with their colleague Sheku Kanneh-Mason, who is our current artist in residence, for a musically diverse programme.

Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra is also characterised by a special intensity of sound – highly virtuosic and full of hope, it offers the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of its chief conductor the best opportunity to present itself as a top-class orchestra.
For several years, Schaghajegh Nosrati has championed the music of French composer and pianist Charles Valentin Alkan, contributing to his rediscovery with an acclaimed recording of several of his piano works. As the final piece of her solo recital, she has chosen Alkan’s unconventional and highly virtuosic “Symphony for Solo Piano.” The program also includes works by Bach, Bartók, Haydn, and contemporary German composer Charlotte Seither.
Sibelius' Violin Concerto and Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra, featuring soloist Julia Fischer and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, promise an intense and highly virtuosic performance. Fischer emphasizes the natural element in Sibelius' concerto, which is among her favorites. Bartók's concerto, known for its strong strings and daring wind passages, also stands out for its intense sound.
From January 2025, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden will present György Kurtág’s only opera Fin de partie, based on Samuel Beckett’s Endgame. During the run of performances, the Staatskapelle and a group of vocal soloists bring Kurtág’s 1990 Beckett homage What Is the Word to the Pierre Boulez Saal, continuing the annual tradition of the orchestra’s guest concerts. Kurtág’s fascinating score is framed by works of Béla Bartók and Franz Schubert. Young British conductor Finnegan Downie Dear, who led the Staatskapelle’s previous Pierre Boulez Saal appearance, returns to the podium. The renowned Venetian »Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto«, conducted by Marco Angius, and pianist Tamara Stefanovich present an extremely varied programme from three eras in the Elbphilharmonie’s Great Hall: In addition to Bartók’s Divertimento for Strings and Haydn’s popular symphony »mit dem Paukenwirbel«, Strauss’ »Burleske für Klavier und Orchester« will be performed – a work that is considered an enormous pianistic challenge: it was only five years after its composition that the work was premiered in 1890 by Liszt student Eugen d’Albert.

Pierre Boulez, the 20th-century music master, was never a Gewandhaus guest. Only his "Notations" has been performed there. Born 100 years ago, Boulez studied in Paris and quickly rose to fame. In the 1950s, he became known for enigmatic compositions and, in the 60s, as a conductor. "Éclat," a key work, combines 15 instruments. Boulez also made history as a conductor, shaping interpretations of Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky, and Bartók. He founded the Ensemble InterContemporain, with Pierre-Laurent Aimard on piano.
